RV Nomad Moving Day Off Hwy 95 Arizona

I’m writing to you from the amazing Kofa National Wildlife Refuge.

I cruised in early this afternoon after staying in Quartzsite for a couple of days to rest and gain my mental composure. Last week was a mental drain and I decided to be alone for a few days. I’ll be heading down to Yuma soon to meet up with my fabulous hiking buddy, Jan. She deserves a whole post, so more about her later.

I always dread moving day, especially from places I feel safe and are familiar to me. But I can’t let the unknown stop me, why would I be out here in the first place? (Side note : as a solo female traveler I have yet to feel completely unsafe anywhere I have stayed in the year and half I’ve been out here. If things seem weird or “off” I have the option to not stay or simply keep the RV closed and I stay inside. Nobody knows who is in here.)

Moving day means securing everything in the RV that could fall. Like any home I have stuff on my table and kitchen counter, these items are placed in baskets and cabinets for safe keeping. My bike gets secured to the dinning table since I don’t have a bike rack yet. And random smaller objects are placed in my kitchen sink.

I moved out of Plomosa Road at dawn around 7am, I didn’t go far to get to Kofa, I believe about 20 miles, but that’s how I roll sometimes – slow. Yet before getting to my destination I went into town for gas and groceries. Whenever the RV is on the move I try to think of what needs to be done before the next stop, especially if there will be no services for a while.

What do I usually need on moving day?

  • Gas for Minnie and the generator (they share the same gas tank)
  • Food cuz a girl has to eat
  • Dump the black and gray tanks
  • Propane to run my heater, fridge and stove
  • Fresh water
  • WiFi to post my blog posts and get work done

A few days previous to stopping in Quartzsite I had just filled my propane, dumped my tanks and refilled my freshwater tank, I was still good to go. But I ran out of eggs; I eat eggs pretty much everyday for breakfast. I needed gas, I always fill up between a 1/4 tank and 1/2. And I started to blog again so I wanted WiFi for publishing to my blog, I found that at McDonald’s in town. As always, when I mooch WiFi I’ll support the establishment that provided it. Against my better judgment, because McDonald’s doesn’t sit well in my stomach, I got a meal. Needless to say, I had a bowl full of veggies for dinner to cleanse my system.

Groceries, gas and WiFi out of the way. I moved out. South down Hwy 95.

If you’re not familiar with Hwy 95 in Arizona, it’s RV central. In winter Snowbirds, RVers and full-timers find an abundance of free and paid places to stay all along this Colorado River corridor. Lake Havasu City, Parker, Quartzsite and Yuma are literally crawling with any type of home on wheels at this time of year. I always know from Bullhead City (where mom lives) all the way down to Yuma I have a place to stay.

But I rarely stay long, I’m a 3-4 day kinda girl and then I need to be on the next adventure! This time it’s to Yuma.

I’ve never stayed in Yuma but Jan is coming down from Wyoming and I’m in the area so it’s a perfect chance to catch up and hike with her!

Yet that’s not until Friday. For now my wheels are in Kofa National Wildlife Refuge.
