Outdoor Books to Devour While Not Hiking

books hikers would like to read

At one time I loved reading yet over the years it took a backseat to daily life and other beloved activities. Staying home during a pandemic has opened my eyes again to the wonderful world of

Like many backpackers and outdoor enthusiasts I’ve found myself indoors lately not-so-patiently waiting for the curve to flatten.

Indoors is not a term we use often fondly, along with “social distancing” and #stayhome, it’s become part of our daily vocabulary at the moment.

We’re desperately looking for ways to stay busy that can, hopefully, still reflect something that resembles outside.

We camp in our backyards, put up indoor tents, cook on our lightweight stoves and I personally still wear my hiking clothes around the house. (They have been washed or I wouldn’t be allowed in the living room.)

Some have taken up hobbies they once wanted to try or pick one up they once loved before realizing outside is where it’s at.

When I was a kid I LOVED reading. In 4th grade I devoured the Little House on a Prairie series. OH! How I wanted to be Laura Ingalls.

1985 brought Anne Shirley into my living room TV. Her spunk and imagination just encouraged me to grab the Avonlea book series.

When I reached puberty I discovered Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret, amongst other books I’m sure mom would still want me not opening. I devoured that overnight, staying up to the early hours to finish.

Yet over the years reading became a chore. The mandatory books in high school were a drag to get through. And as I aged life took me away from my beloved books.

Then in walks the Coronavirus.

Forced indoors I continue to dedicate a lot of my time to blogging and vlogging, which I had already started previous to Covid-19.

Yet one can only write and edit for so many hours a day.

Sure, I watch episodes of Nat Geo Wild, Keeping Up with the Kardashians (don’t judge me) and Running Wild with Bear Grylls. I wanted more than indirect entertainment.

So I began to read the plethora of OUTDOOR BOOKS I’ve been collecting (and thankful I didn’t donate as I moved about) over the years.

Here are some of the books I plan to crack open soon:

What am I missing? What have you read that a hiker/backpacker should read?

Before you mention them, I read Wild and Into the Wild years ago. LOVED them both!
