How I Rank a Trail a Trail’s Difficulty
I follow the guidelines listed with the National Park Service – How to Determine Hiking Difficulty
To calculate difficulty I use this formula : Elevation Gain x 2 x distance (in miles). The product’s square root is the numerical rating.
For instance, if a hike is 2 miles and has an elevation gain of 400 the difficulty would be easy with a rating of 40.
