Midlife Money : Starting from Scratch at 52 Years Old

Starting from scratch at 52 with a new job

Recently I lost it all in a toxic relationship. He’s gone and so is my money. At 52 I’m rebuilding my life from scratch and this is how I’m planning on doing it.

My Midlife Reboot and Financial Security

Today I’m going to do something I’ve never done and thought I’d never do – let you into the private world of my financials, well, my plan for financial security at 50 years old and beyond.

I once had financial security and I stupidly let someone convince me I didn’t need it. My wealth portfolio wasn’t grand but it was growing, and I planned to continue to aggressively build it throughout my 50s and 60s. Then I met and stayed with a man that manipulated me into believing this was a farce and all I needed was him. And then he left me.

After 4 years of losing my assets, he left. Today I have NOTHING and I will never let this happen again.

I am literally starting from scratch with a job, new business ventures and starting to rebuild my wealth portfolio again.

If you take one thing from this post and my mistake is to never let anyone convince you that your personal and financial security isn’t needed. As you get older your mental and financial health are more and more vital to enjoying life in your terms. If someone is attempting to convince you otherwise, they are not for you, they are against you.

Disclaimer : I am not a guru, professional, etc., this purely entertainment and my method that I’m literally still experimenting with.

Planning My Financial Future in My 50s

I break down in more detail my income ventures in the video below but let me list them here because in the future I’d like to keep my readers updated regularly as to my progress in creating financial stability for myself at midlife.

Midlife can sometimes be a time of rebirth and reboot, I’m doing both financially and psychologically.

I’ve found myself solo again after a breakup from a toxic relationship where I let him manipulate me out of $10,000s of dollars. Needless to say, I’ve learned the hard way about sticking to your gut instincts and not falling for the matters of the heart. I’m finding myself building my financial security from literal scratch.

For the last 4 months (June 2024 – October 2024) I’ve been working my butt off to explore income options online as well as the traditional hourly or contract methods. This is not easy physically in your 50s but I’m happy to have the knowledge of 30 decades under my belt to know myself and what I’m capable of to make income decisions that should work for me.

Below are my side hustles and methods I’m going to rebuild my life financially.

OFFLINE WORK

Hourly Wages

I got a job. I can’t rely on side hustles and online income at this time to build me up out of poverty, so I’m going to work for an hourly wage. It’s part-time for now but it will definitely help me get a vehicle and up on my feet again.

Contract Work

Last year when I lived in Flagstaff, Arizona I created a dog-sitting business. I used Rover.com to help me find clients.

I love pets, especially the furry ones so this is a job I enjoy immensely.

Opening my doors back up for business here in October 2024 I’ve attained 2 new clients with 3 requests for sittings.

ONLINE WORK

Not one to patiently wait for the positions I applied for to offer a job, I decided to make the best of my time and pursue opportunities online.

I researched many types of online income and side hustle methods from writing eBooks to gigs on Fiverr to Human Intelligence Tasks on Amazon’s Mechanic Turks, which I highly recommend clear avoidance of this “work”, yet very few seemed promising for me. Maybe they didn’t pay much or the effort wasn’t worth the amount I would get paid or I simply wanted work in a field I had knowledge in already like digital marketing or customer service.

I settled on the online income methods below. These seem to be the best fit for me.

My Website / Blog

Though I make only a few dollars a month with Google ads and meager Amazon sales this is my hub. Everything I do to earn money, write about my life and create community comes out of my website.

I considered AllieRambles an asset of sorts since it’s my online property, my little section of the internet I own. I’ve watched too many people over the years lose their livelihoods because Facebook, YouTube, TikTok or any other social media platform remove their content, many times never giving a reason. Don’t get me wrong, I have a YouTube channel and Instagram, etc. yet I will never rely on their income to pay a mortgage or car payment.

YouTube Channel

Never in a million years would think I’d run a YouTube channel yet in May 2018 I decided to start documenting my journey from California to life on the road in my RV. I wasn’t very good and I was inconsistent but I loved it! For me, those early videos are a moving photo album to enjoy.

I’m still not that good but I am consistent now with a lot to say about living a more fulfilling midlife. Allie Rambles YouTube channel is growing steadily and I even had a video go viral (for me). Be sure to watch my video below to see how much I made with that one video alone, it may surprise you!

Substack

Substack is a platform where writers and creators can charge for newsletter content. I’ve just started my Substack journey and hope to maybe build a midlife women community there some day. For now I take on writing more from my emotional side of this midlife journey I’m on. With a huge side of venting.

Buy Me a Coffee

Last year the tips I earned from people leaving them on my Buy Me a Coffee account helped me buy gas so I could Doordash, a treat every so often from Starbucks and truly helped me not feel alone when I was. The generosity of people that tipped me when I was at my lowest is something I will never forget.

I consider Buy Me a Coffee a tip jar of sorts, if you like my content simply send me some love.

Print on Demand

This was one of the ventures I researched for a few months before deciding that my basic graphic and digital marketing skills would come in handy.

I’ve been working online off and for over 15 years yet not until this summer, when I came out of the toxic relationship and realized I need to make a stronger financial future for myself, did I take making money online serious. And the venture I’m jumping into head first is my Print on Demand business.

Starting only a couple of weeks ago (mid-October 2024) I’ve opened a store and have plans to expand every week. I’m gearing up for the holiday season and excited to see where this is going to take me!
