Arriving in Maternity Springs Group Campsite
This was a big moving day for me! Just kidding. I drove a whole 50 miles or so to get to Maternity Springs Group Campsite (link to Campendium) from my last spot in Tombstone, AZ.
I had been in this area before a year ago but not in this spot. I remember the sign saying “group camp” and I knew reservations need to be made for the group staying there (I’m not a group unless you count me, myself and I) and even if I did stay I run the risk of getting kicked out for a group that made reservations … which is what happen to me. More about that to come.
Like stated above, when I was in the area last year I didn’t stay in this spot, I moved back further away from the highway in Cieneguita Camping Area. But I realized after setting up I was missing out!
I’m not encouraging you to stay in any group camp ground for ethical reasons – you should have a group with a reservation – but this spot was beautiful and fun.
Not hiking fun. But the visitors I had to my camp were fun to watch.
Local Kids Come by for a Visit
There is free grazing in the area; cows move about freely. I’ve been in the region camped around bulls, one even came up to my RV to check it out! I was unsure what the large guy would do but he sniffed around and left.
This time I had the treat of being greeted by mamas and baby bulls. The calved are cute and curious!
There must have been around 6 calves that approached my RV as well as the 2 others in the campsite. Curiously they sniffed around the exterior and surrounding furniture. I tried to stay as quiet as possible to get photos since they spook easily.
It was such a treat to watch the youngsters roam, play and be curious little guys.
The next morning I was greeted by a stunning display of the sun and sky! (Image at end of post.)
I Had to Leave the Baby Bulls Behind
The plan was to stay in this spot for 2-3 days while I waited for a friend coming from Tucson, AZ to join me in another camp area.
But I was forced to leave after one night.
Yup, just like the title says, I got kicked out.
There were 2 other campers in the group camp with me. Around noon a gentleman came by letting us all know he had reserved the spot for his group that weekend. He was kind about it and, frankly, he had every right to let us know.
So I moved back to Cieneguita Camping area just a few miles back.
Lesson learned – just stick to camp spots made for one.
