Getting to the Colorado Trail : One Week Away

June 21, 2021. I was still a week out from meeting Stephanie and the last weekend before we hit the Colorado Trail. In need of more altitude hiking and good places to stay, we moved from hiking Vail pass to Loveland Pass.

At over 11,000′, Loveland Pass seemed like a great place to hike and get more familiar with the higher altitudes.

We climbed up to the pass with the RV, parked, open the door and realized how cold and windy these higher altitudes are. Looking at the stark landscape, possible ledges I’d be hiking aside (I’m scared of heights) and having hiked the day before, I passed on a hike here.

Taking the obligatory selfies and videos proving we were there we drove back down to Dillon, CO to hang out at REI. It’s always cool to find an outfitter so I can meander through the store imagining having all that cool stuff! But where would I put it in the RV?

I left my fantasies behind at REI and we cruised down to the quaint town of Georgetown. Hoping for a location to park that day as well as overnight, Georgetown couldn’t provide yet we found a forest road that lead us to a free campsite right off the road.

June 22, 2021. The next morning we had a glorious sunrise before heading down to highway 70 and more adventures!

This time stopping at Genesee Park to hike some hills and hopefully see some bison! The bison were elusive that day but I got a good 2.7 hilly miles in. (Gotta stay fit for the Colorado Trail.)

That night we stayed off the side of the road off highway 70 near a rock quarry. Sometimes the places you gotta overnight are not the prettiest but sometimes tired eyes and feet call for simply somewhere safe to rest. We did see mountain goats on the hill nearby – what a treat!

We woke in the morning (5am) to big rigs hauling rock stopping in the lot we slept in. Surrounded my these monsters we couldn’t leave but it was pretty cool watching how the process was done and imagining where they were taking their loads.

June 23, 2021. Once the early morning trucks went about their business, we packed up and sauntered our way to Golden, CO! You don’t drink Coors Light your whole life and be this close to it’s beginnings and not go visit.

Unfortunately, the Coors factory was closed but we still had a blast walking the beautiful town of Golden.

Next stop : Stephanie’s home and getting ready for our CT hike thru!
