JUNE 29, 2021 COLORADO TRAIL // DAY 2
Random Creek to Brookside McCurdy Trail Junction // Miles 62.3 – 49.5 Segment 4
Hello FOREST! And LONG MEADOW!
Waking up on day 2 I actually slept well. I never thought I’d be cool with sleeping in a tiny tent in a mummy sleeping bag on an air mattress that barely covers my ass – but I’m totally cool with it.
We packed up and headed into a forest. Eating a Bobos bar for breakfast, I tried to warm up but the cooler mountain mornings don’t warm bones up like the AZ desert mornings do (where I tend to winter).
I’m realizing as I hike that the elevation is taxing my breathing as I ascend. I arrived in CO a good week before the start of the CT yet I’m thinking I didn’t test high enough. More stopping to catch my breath solves that problem.
We do our first major climb up through the Lost Creek Wilderness which was tougher than expected due to my not being acclimated to the elevation. But Stephanie to the rescue! Queue the music! She quietly and cautiously (to not disturb other hikers) turned on some dancing music and we slowly two stepped ourselves up.
At the top was the LONGEST meadow I’ve ever seen and walked. Ok, maybe not but it sure did feel that way. It was nice to walk relatively flat ground. We danced in the meadow too!
Camp that night at the edge of the woods, near a creek was much awaited! We set up camp and ate right in time for the rain to begin.
13.8 more miles done.
