November 7, 2022 Inks Lake State Park, Texas
I arrived at Inks Lake yesterday with much relief, finding free or inexpensive locations to stay in this part of Texas is rather difficult. The burden of finding a place to stay was really weighing on my mentally and physically.
Texas Is Not the State for RV Nomads
Two days ago I stayed in a little city park camp ground in a town called Dublin, TX that was $15 an evening. When I woke in the morning to a man sitting at my picnic table and he seemed a bit suspicious. Being alone I didn’t want to approach him to ask him to leave yet I also couldn’t leave the safety of my RV since I was hooked up to the electricity at the site. I felt trapped. He ended up leaving after about 6 hours. I was supposed to stay another night yet opted to leave and try my chances on the road again.
Sometimes towns and cities feel less safe than out in the woods or desert simply due to the fact there are higher odds of running into someone that may want to do me harm. Texas has been a challenge for me since I rely on free public lands for most of my overnight stays yet I’ve been forced to park overnight near or in towns and cities.
I left Dublin, Texas to travel a few hours to Evant where I stayed the night in a picnic area rest stop. It was a quiet evening until early that morning when I got the slow drive-by gaze the locals like to give my “kind of people”. You know, the nomad, gypsy, vagrant type. Feeling very unwelcome in a public place I had every right to be, I packed up within 30 minutes and left for Inks Lake State Park.
Frazzled by my experiences so far in Texas a stay at a state park is a welcome reprieve.
