Awesome Gear for the Over 50 Hiker
I took up hiking in my mid-40s so I started out thinking like an older hiker from the beginning. At that time I bought what my favorite (young) hikers where suggesting and, frankly, not all of that gear is preferred for the aging body. I had previous injuries that pestered my body and my feet ached after just a few miles. But I wasn’t giving up on my new favorite pastime.
Over the last decade or so I made adjustments to my gear and my hiking style so I can continue to hike as long as I can walk (hopefully).
Here are my latest gear iterations I come to hike with during my day trips in my 50’s. I wouldn’t hike without these favorites.
Black Diamond Alpine Carbon Cork Trekking Poles
You may be wondering why my list starts with trekking poles. Well, they are feet and knee preservers. They certainly help with taking the pressure off your leg joints AND they also serve to help you balance while on trail.
Unconditionally Guaranteed for Life Darn Tough Socks
You read that right, these socks are guaranteed for life. I’ve never had to return any but I’ve had friends that do and they are satisfied with the new socks and the service. I stand firmly by brands I love and trust and Darn Tough Socks are one of those few brands. Oh, and they fit nice and snug. I’ve only had one blister on trail and that was my fault so you can be sure they will be a great sock!
I don’t hike without my pack from Osprey. When I began hiking back in 2014 I found my first Osprey pack and have only used that brand ever since. They are made very well, the women’s packs are made for the curves of a woman, the waist straps are comfy and I love the air venting for my back. Definitely give Osprey a try for not just your hiking needs but that’s how I do it.
I’ll admit I may drink a lot of water on trail and I prefer it cool. I’m not apologizing for the kind of hiker I am. Carrying the Hydro Flask is slightly heavier but it’s worth the cool drink you’ll want as you hike. And I love that I can use this bottle for YEARS! (And I have!) Mine has a ton of stickers on it, I’d almost say it’s become a member of my family, sorta, since it goes with me everywhere.
This goes without saying that you really should carry supplies just in case something bad happens. I always add an allergy medicine to this like Benadryl just in case there is some sorta allergic reaction. I’ve had to take one for a bee sting.
Portable Shadow aka Sun Umbrella
Are you like me and aren’t keen on hats but want shade while you hike? A sun umbrella is just right for you. And, bonus, if it rains it doubles as a regular umbrella too!
